Planet Liga Launches Green Goal Competition For Football Clubs
Blog Article
Planet liga is the first global football tournament where fans score green goals for their clubs. The team that earns the most points in a season wins the Planet League trophy. The initiative has been launched by football’s community organisations and sustainability experts Planet League, who work with clubs to help them reduce their environmental footprint.
The league aims to inspire fans and players alike to make simple changes that will have a huge impact, like switching to electric vehicles or reducing plastic waste. It also provides a platform to see what other fans are doing to be more sustainable, helping them get inspiration from their heroes. The campaign is supported by 71 clubs, including Manchester United Foundation, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal FC.
For the last two weeks of January, clubs across the top divisions will battle it out for the coveted Green Football Cup. Unlike other tournaments, it’s fan action that decides who takes the Cup home, as fans can earn green goals for their clubs by taking climate-friendly actions. From eating a Planet liga veggie meal, turning the thermostat down one degree or drinking from a reusable bottle, there are hundreds of different actions that can be registered on the Planet League website.
As well as announcing the launch of the new competition, Planet League has teamed up with Ball Corporation – the world’s leading supplier of aluminum packaging and a global leader in sustainability – to bring fans a range of ‘money-can’t-buy-prizes’. There is no room for simulation though, and fans must abide by the internet phrase ‘pics or it didn’t happen’ to ensure that their green actions are valid.
Planet League was set up to use the power of football to help people live greener lives and has already seen more than 200,000 verified eco-friendly actions recorded on its platform. The organisation has worked with clubs and players including former Tottenham winger Lucas Moura and Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher. Fleetwood Town Community Trust, who are working with Planet League, will be on hand ahead of the club’s match against Forest Green Rovers to explain how they can support the campaign and show fans how to get involved.
